INTERVIEWS - METAL 666 (USA) 2001

A band that I just recently became aware of, Unmoored play a style of melodic death metal that doesn't give up any aggression what so ever. Their latest, 'Kingdoms of Greed' is a raging slab of metal! I was lucky enough to get a chance to talk to vocalist/guitarist Christian Älvestam to see what the band has been up to.

Wayfaerer- Well, first off could you give a brief band history?
Christian-We started back in '93-'94. Released three demos between '94 and '97. Recorded our first album in '97 (called "Cimmerian"), but due to several reasons it wasn't released until the spring of '99 through the Singaporian label Pulverised Records. Back in 2000 we released our second album called "Kingdoms Of Greed" and here we are:)

W-I haven't heard 'Cimmerian' but I've heard its a bit different than 'Kingdoms of Greed'. How much of a difference is there really?
C-Well, "Cimmerian" is somewhat more death 'n' roll influenced than the material on "Kingdoms...". It's not as fast, nor as intense as its follower.

W-How's the response been to Kingdoms of Greed?
C-Awesome:) I've not read one single bad review of it to date. I think its selling pretty good as well!

W-Great! I personally thought it was one of the better albums of 2000. You have two tracks that seem a bit different than the others, "Final State part 2" and "In the Dark Midst of Winter". Both are pretty emotionally powerful, what was the reason for putting them on the album?
C-They both, as well as the whole album, pretty much reflects me and my interest in music in general. I don't like albums that are monotonous...I like it dynamic and varied!

W-Yeah, thats the way to go...speaking of variation, you have a really awesome vocal range... you are able to get the lows, highs, and clean vox really well! I always have to complement the vocalists that are able to both sing and growl.
C-Thanks man:) Well...I've been practising for quite some time now and it feels like it's finally paying off!

W-Yeah, definitely! How do you guys work the live set? I know you only had a drummer (and a good one at that!) for the recording session.
C-We've just recruited a new drummer so from now on playing live is no longer a problem. We are rehearsing like hell as we speak:)

W-Cool! Do you have any new songs written yet?
C-Two new brutal fuckers:)

W-How would you compare them to Kingdoms of Greed?
C-In the same vein :)

W-Awesome! I thought I had heard your label deal was up? Is this true and if so, are you currently looking for a new one?
C-Well...we thought we'd at least give it a shot trying to take Unmoored one step further, but if we are not to score a new deal with a major label we'll probably release our third album through Pulverised...again. They've told us they're interested in doing so, but that's "if" we don't find ourselves a new "home".

W-Are you looking for any labels in particular?
C-Major labels in general :)

W-Well, best of luck finding one! What have you been listening to lately?
C-Thanks:) I listen to all kinds of shit...at the moment I've really come to dig the new Vader album...it kicks ass:)

W-Hmmm, I haven't heard that one yet actually. Anything that your looking forward to in 2001?
C-I'm really looking forward to hear the new Satariel album:) I forgot...Vomitory's latest album "Revelation Nausea" and Darkanes latest, "Rusted Angel", kill as well:)

W-Oh yeah, I'm a pretty big Darkane fan too! I've asked this question to some other people before but I figure everyone has their own story...why are there so many killer bands from Sweden?
C-I think one of the reasons is that Swedish kids have the possibility to learn how to play instruments at an early age. The presence of several musical supportgroups then create the necessary conditions for developing and succeeding as a band.

W-Ah, I see...do you have any closing comments you'd like to make?
C-Well...first of all thanks to you Kyle for your shown interest:) Do yourselves a favour and check out "Kingdoms Of Greed", out on Pulverised Records, if you like your metal brutal and melodic at the same time!

W-Thanks for your time man!
