The first thing I
have to ask is why haven’t I heard of you guys before? Is it that
the metal press in England have ignored you or have I been asleep at the
switch?
The main thing, i believe is that we were on the Singaporian recordlabel
pulverised records. It was a pretty small label, with limited distribution
possibilities. But now when we´re on Code 666, we hope to get better
distribution, and it seems like it´s working!
Would you describe yourselves as death metal as there is a huge power
metal influence evident in “Indefinite Soul-Extension”?
I wouldn´t discribe our music as death metal, and death metal only.
There are many different styles and influences on the album. We just write
riffs and parts that we think sounds good, no matter which style or genré
it is. And if people define that as death metal, black metal or power
metal, so be it!
I couldn’t believe there were only three of you in the band, your
sound is so all encompassing, is that the effect you were looking for?
Earlier we were four members in Unmoored. But due to different reasons
the old guitarist & bassplayer dicided to leave the band. When they
left, me and Christian wanted to get ahold of a good lead guitarist, to
take the music for Indefinite Soul-Extension to the next level. Since
Christian had been friends with Thomas for quite a while and knew what
an excellent guitarplayer he was, the choice was easy. Why we haven´t
got a new bassplayer is basicly because Christian put all the bass on
the album and because we haven´t been playing live since the old
members quit the band.
This is the second album you have had produced at The Abyss studios, are
you pleased with the sound that they create for you?
Yes, we are very pleased with the production. It´s a very thick
sound, it almoast feels like you´re smashing into a brick wall,
face forwards! We were in Abyss for one week, where we laid down the drums,
bass & guitars. It was fun, but very stressfull. It´s was not
easy to record the foundation in that short period of time. The rest of
the instruments & vocals, such as acoustic guitars, keyboards and
violin, were recorded in Thomas own studio. He also did the mixing and
mastering of the album.
Where did the inspiration for the songs on “Indefinite
Soul-Extension” come from?
The inspiration can come from anywere. Different types of music, things
that happen in your everyday life. It´s impossible to specificly
point our the inspiration for the songs.
The artwork for the cover of the new album is really atmospheric, how
did you choose it?
The artwork and the lyrics on the album goes hand in hand. It´s
an idea that Christian had and which he developed in cooperation with
a graphic designer called Fabio (http://www.neontrinitykill.com). There
is not much more i can tell you about it though. The reason is that the
lyrics are very personal to Christian and nobody but him, will never know
what they are about.
Why did it take so long for you to find a new deal after leaving Pulverised
records and are you enthusiastic about Code 666?
A while after pulverised got bankrupt, we recorded a promo with two songs,
which also appear on the album (Cinders Veil & Leave-taking). We send
it out to about 20 recordlabels and we didn´t get very much response.
But after some months Code 666 got in touch with us. They really liked
the album and were desperate to get us onboard. Since they were so enthustiastic
we pretty immediately decided to join up with them. Since we signed the
contract, everything has run very smoothly with no problems, and so far
Code 666 has been great!
Do you think that death metal is becoming more popular again after a long
period in the shadow of black metal?
Yes, definately. There has been many new bands coming up in the last 2-3
years. In Sweden there is quite a big change. It started about 2 years
ago with the powermetal band Hammerfall. They got big and were displayed
on swedish television. And it seems like it´s getting heavier and
heavier all the time. Nowadays, bands like In flames and Soilwork are
being broadcasted on swedish television.
Do you think that people could draw comparisons between Unmoored and Soilwork?
Personally i don´t see much resemblance. We have a completely different
sound then Soilwork. We lean more on the oldschool and they lean more
on the newschool. The only thing that we have incommon is that we both
blend growls with clean vocals.
What bands are you listening to at the moment?
I´ve been buying much old death metal lately to complete to collection.
But some new albums i´ve purchased is Aborted - Goremageddon, Vital
Remains - Dechristianize , E.S.T - Seven Days Of Falling (Swedish jazz-band),
Are you keen for Sweden to join the Euro and why?
We didn´t change to Euro. I´m not very interrested in politics,
so thats nothing i would like to comment.
Are there any plans for a UK tour to support the album?
Not that i know of, but thats hard to tell right now. Code 666 told us
that they are doing everything to get us on tour. So we just have to hope
for the best, and maybe we´ll see you in the UK!
What are your long-term aims for the band?
We will keep Unmoored alive as long as we think it´s fun, and as
long as it gives us something. Our goal is to try to exceed ourselves
all the time and to make the next album better then the last. And if people
like it we´ll hopefully get more recognition and we will be reaching
out to a broader audience.
The vocals on the album are really strong, how did you arrive at the blend
of growling and singing you used?
Christian has been gowling and singing for about 10 years, so he have
had quite some time to develope his voice. And if you want to be good
at something you must practise, and thats exactly what he has done. There
are no shortcuts!
You have had some recent line up changes is everything settling down now?
Yeah, we feel very comfortable with the line-up as it is. For now, we
have no plans getting a permanent bassplayer. If there will be any touring
coming up, we´ll probably use a session bassplayer. But if there
will be more consistent touring, we will have to take it up for discussion
again.
What was the last book you read?
It was actually a book i read for school, Stop stealing sheep and find
out how type really works. It´s a book explaining typography. (I´m
studyng to be a graphic designer)
What’s you favourite film?
It´s hard to say, I´ve seen too many! But at the moment I
probably have to say The Lord Of The Rings movies.
If you were stranded on a desert island as a band, would you prefer to
have your instruments or women for company?
Hehe, women ofcourse! =T
Do you think that Unmoored will still be playing in ten years time?
As i said before, If we take joy in what we do, Yes! If not, No!
Finally is there anything you would like to say to Astro Zombie’s
readers?
Yeah, Thanks for the interview Nik! Stay brutal and check out the new
UNMOORED album INDEFINITE SOUL-EXTENSION!
