Hi, here Nico from
Executioner Zine.
1.When and why did Unmoored start?
Unmoored started back in the shift between 93/94. It started because they
all liked metal and couldn´t wait to get in a band and play for
real, with a full line-up.
2.You have released 3 demos and 3 albums ("Cimmerian", "Kingdoms
of greed" and "Indefinite soul extension"); 3 sounds and
styles different from one to another. Wy did you change your style in
every release? Do your influences have any relation with those changes?
We have evolved as musicians. It has been 10 years since the band started.
I don´t think it´s that strange that the styles differ. We
have always strived to push ourselves further and further. We don´t
want to make the same record twice and to be renewing, you must find new
ways to approach the writing process.
3.From the very beginning of Unmoored you have suffered a lot of line-up
problems. Is that an explanation for all the style changes I mentioned
before?
Well, the town where the band is based, isn't filled with that many metal
muscians. So when members of the original line-up left the band, ít
was really hard finding new ones. Also, later on everyone didn´t
have the same vision with the band, so it was decided to go seperate ways.
There were no hard feelings involved though! Everyone were in different
stages in their lives.
4.Tell us a bit what you think about the progression of Unmoored from
1993 until today.
I really like the progression. Since i joined the band, we have completely
walked the path i wanted and hoped for. We have become more agressive
and intense everytime we´ve released an album. We have also more
progressive elements nowadays, but the catchyness and use of clean vocals
are still present and they are stronger than ever!
5.In Spain we haven't had the oportunity to see Unmoored live. Can you
explain us how is an Unmoored show and where have you been playing recently?
Which is the best concert you have played?
We haven´t been playing live that much. I have only done 2 shows
with the band, so I don´t really have a lot to tell you on the subject,
but our approach is nothing extraordinary. We go on stage and play our
songs and try to headbang as much as possible, hehe!
6.Which bands would you like to tour with?
Slayer! Hehe. No, but it would be cool to tour with a band that is more
similar to us. Christian are friends with some of the people in The Crown.
It would be kind of cool to do a tour with them. Their style is maybe
not that much like ours, but what the fuck, they are cool guys =)
7."Cimmerian", groovie Death Metal; "Kingdoms of greed",
Melodic Black/Death; and now Indefinite soul extension. How would you
define it?
If you want to label it, I would maybe say melodic death metal (the oldschool
way), with elements of black metal & progressive rock. But in the
end of the day we just write riffs and parts that we think sound cool.
If some riffs or parts differ in genré, so be it. As long as the
song comes out cool, we don´t care!
8.On the first two albums there is a particular detail, those clean and
gloomy vocals. "Indefinite soul extension" is faster and more
agressive, but it includes again that vocal set, which is a significant
detail. Which is your opinion about that?
Yes, I couldn´t agree more! We have always used clean vocals, even
back in 1993. We believe it makes the music somewhat more dynamic and
interesting. It also makes the writing process a bit more challenging,
whick always works as a source of inspiration.
9."Kingdoms of greed" was produced by Tommy Tägtgren and
Abyss Studios quality, which was a big difference with "Cimmerian"
production. "Indefinite soul extension" sounds fucking great.
Where did you record it and who produced it?
We went back to Tommy Tägtgren and his Abyss studio again. We stayed
for one week this time, recording the drums, the bass & the rhythm-guitars.
It was fun, but very stressfull. It´s was not easy to record the
foundation in that short period of time. Vocals and additional instruments,
such as acoustic guitars, keyboards and violin, were recorded at Thomas's
studio. He also did the mixing and mastering of the album. We are very
pleased with the result as well!
10.I always do that question to the bands I interview; I know it's not
an easy thing but...have you got plans to play live in Spain? Have you
got had important concert, tour or festival proposition?
As I told you earlier, we haven´t played live that much and we've
never been on touring, but if we would have the opportunity to come to
Spain, we wouldn´t hesitate! At the moment there are no tours or
shows, scheduled.
11.What do you think about Sweden and European scene?
The scene in Europe is blooming like never before! It´s really cool
to see so many bands, totaly dedicated to metal! In Sweden we are now
also, step by step, moving into the more commercial scene, with bands
like Hammerfall, Soilwork, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Opeth and Nasum, to
name a few!
12.Do you know any spanish band, record label, woman, actor? Hahahaha;
Do you like it? Hahahaha
I probably own a record with a Spanish band, but I can´t remember
any right now. Isn´t Antonio Banderas Spanish by the way? haha
13.Which are your favourite last 3 album releases?
The Crown - Possessed 13
Aborted - Goremageddon
Mars Volta - De-Loused In The Comatorium
14.What plans do you have for the future?
We are now writing material for our next album and we can´t wait
to get active, playing live and so on.
Well, this is the end of the interview. It has been a pleasure for us,
thank you for your attention. We wish the best for Unmoored. Do you want
to tell something to your spanish fans?
Be sure to check out "Indefinite Soul-Extension" and stay brutal!
