How did Unmoored
come to be?
(Christian answering):
Well, me, Rickard and Tobbe met, back in 1993, through our drummer of
that time. We rehearsed together a couple of times and since we all got
on well with each other and shared a similar taste in music, we decided
to give it a try, realizing our mutual vision. Unmoored was born.
Indefinite Soul-Extension is your third full length. How does it compare
to the other two? What were you trying to do differently this time around?
(Henrik answering):
All our albums are very different from each other. Cimmerian is more of
a death´n´roll album. Kingdoms of greed is death metal with
some elements of black metal. We see Indefinite Soul-Extension as a natural
follow-up to Kingdoms Of Greed. The material on the new album is taken
to a new level and it's more progressive than on the previous albums.
It´s also more varied in terms of riffs and composition. We have
worked alot with the arrangements, as well as we've tried to avoid the
more obvious turns, but still make the songs complete. Another thing is
the guitarsolos. We´ve never used solos in this extent before.
How would you describe your sound to a curious metal fan?
(Henrik answering):
To describe our music is not the easiest thing. As I said, all three albums
are quite different from each other. If we concentrate on Indefinite Soul-Extension,
I believe you could say that the foundation is death metal, but there
are also elements of other styles, like black metal and progrock. We also
blend low growls with clean vocals. Everything to make the music fresh
and exciting. However, the best thing to do is tracking down the album
and finding out yourself:)
Your clean vocals are often compared to Dan Swano. Does this comparison
ever get annoying to you after a while or is it still flattering to hear?
(Christian answering):
Actually, I couldn't care less! Everyone is entitled to their opinion,
so why bother! :)
“Leave Taking” has almost a black metal vibe in some parts.
Was that what you were going for?
(Christian answering):
Yes...hehe! There are a couple of songs on the album which turned out
a bit more black-ish and "Leave-Taking" is definately one of
them. I don't know why though. It's not like it was planned or anything.
It just felt right, writing those parts, so I went for it! :)
What is your stance on keyboards when it comes to music? When do you decide
when to hold back or not?
(Henrik answering):
Our music has always been based on guitars and always will be. We only
use keyboards to create a special mood, or when we want a melody to sound
a bit different from the usual guitar sound, but the basic rule is: Never
let the keyboards outdo the guitars!
I’ve heard your other projects. What is the status on Solar Dawn?
(Christian answering):
We're doing some pre-productional stuff at the moment. Hopefully there
will be a new album recorded, in a not too distant future!
Your other band Torchbearer just released a new album as well. How did
that project come about?
(Christian answering):
The labelmanager of Cold Records asked me if I would be interested in
putting a death/black metal band together, releasing an album through
Cold Records/Metal Blade Records. Since I like recording different stuff
with different people, I accepted his offer. I then got in touch with
some friends of mine, playing in bands such as Satariel and Setherial,
asking them if they would be interesting in a collaboration. Being so,
we ended up recording our debut-album at Black Lounge studios, in December
2003. It's entitled "Yersinia Pestis" and it was released in
Europe on March 22 and it will be released in the US on May 4.
Has the recent press attention you’ve been getting changed the band
at all? Is Unmoored a priority for the members now?
(Henrik answering):
Me and Christian play in several other bands together (Incapacity, Torchbearer,
Solar Dawn). For instance, if there's a recording session coming up with
Incapacity, we'll give priority to Incapacity. If there's a show with
Torchbearer, we'll then give priority to Torchbearer. Unmoored has been
around for about 10 years now, so of course it´s very close to our
hearts. It will always have high priority and at the time being, everything
is working out really well!
Your new album is pretty brutal. How important is it to keep the death
metal element in tact but still being able to deliver those melodic moments?
(Henrik answering):
It´s very important, but it's also very hard at the same time. We
always try to be diverse, cause it´s much more rewarding, both listening
to and composing!
You have one song that is just straight up death metal and I read that
it is your favorite song you’ve put out so far. Is this an indication
of Unmoored becoming even more brutal next time around?
(Christian answering):
No, it's not an indicator! I just like the song and the way it turned
out. That's all there's to it! :)
What made you decide to end the cd with a ballad?
(Christian answering):
Well, why not? :) We placed "Final State Part I" last on "Cimmerian",
"Final State Part II" in the middle on "Kingdoms Of Greed"
and since it's never really been an alternative, opening any of our albums
with a ballad, it felt kind of natural placing "Final State Part
III" last on "Indefinite Soul-Extension".
Are there any touring plans for 2004 that you can speak of?
(Henrik answering):
At the moment we have no touring plans at all. Hopefully we will be able
to do some later this year. We have never been out on the road with Unmoored,
so it would definately be a blast getting the opportunity!
Any chance of getting you guys on tour in the States?
(Henrik answering):
I don´t think that will happen any day soon, being quite a small
band and all, but it would definately be really cool, going overseas and
do some touring:)
What’s next for Unmoored?
(Christian answering):
Hopefully we will be able to do some live-shows in the year ahead. As
goes for a fourth album, we have started working on new material, but
still there's a long way to go, before anything new will be recorded!
We'll see what the future holds! :)
