1.First of all, tell me what made that you have
changed your music so radically as we compare your latest record "Kingdoms
of greed" to the previous one "Cimmerian"?
Well, when Nicke (our former drummer that is) left us after we had finished
the recordings of "Cimmerian", there was suddenly no longer anyone putting
a spoke in our wheel. Nicke had more and more become the missing link
in the band you see. He simply didn't care as much for the band as the
rest of us and consequently didn't rehearse as much as needed in order
to improve his skills. So with him being out of the picture and all,
the compromising days were over. This is the main reason for our development
or "radical change in sound" as you prefer to call it.
2.Let me explain my point of view. "Cimmerian"
was a good album, yet reminding a little bit Entombed or Konkhra musically.
On "Kingdoms..." we have more brutal approach, turning Unmoored into
a direction of Hypocrisy or Dissection-alike sounds...
When Nicke was still in the band, the four of us mostly arranged the
music together throughout our rehearsals. For that reason the songs
often came to be more or less live-based, simply relaying on a heavy
groove all through. So when Nicke quit the band and our rehearsals stopped,
I started writing, as well as arranging, all our new material completely
on my own. Since I couldn't try out my ideas the way we used to do when
we still rehearsed, I simply had to make riffs good enough standing
on their own feet, figuratively that is. On account of this I don't
think it's hard to understand why the material on "Kingdoms..." is somewhat
more technical and proggressive than on "Cimmerian". As goes for whether
we sound like this or that, I leave to the listener to decide.
3.Everything is so regularly Swedish on the new
album. You recorded that in one of the most important Swedish studios,
I mean Abyss, the mastering was made in Cutting Room, music is also
Swedish to the core... What you had on your mind planning that all?
It's not like we planned it or anything. We just wanted to do the new
material justice and that was by giving it the proper conditions. It's
not for nothing a lot of bands pay a visit to Abyss and Cutting Room
you know.
4.How you could compare a work at Sunlight where you recorded the debut,
to Abyss where "Kingdoms..." was recorded?
The biggest difference between the two studios is probably that Tommy
Tägtgren (Abyss) is somewhat more commited to his work than Tomas Skogsberg
(Sunlight) is nowadays. It seems as if Skogsberg is a bit fed up with
death metal, while Tägtgren, who is relatively new in the line of buisness,
still hungers for it and its practicans. Apart from that, both studios
are topnotch.
5.Could you explain me another strange fact? This
time I mean a cover of the CD ("Kingdoms...") which is so similar to
"the best of" release from Dutch Death Metal band Pestilence. It's about
that sphere on it...
The thing is that the cover we've used is the very same Seagrave-painting
Pestilence used for their "Best of" album "Mind Reflections". Since
no-one in our band is a big fan of Pestilence, we didn't know the artwork
had allready been used by them. Besides, we were told by SOD Magazine,
which we bought the painting from, that the artwork was still unpublished
and we'd consequently own all the rights to the painting once we'd buy
it. So when Roadrunner threatened to sue us for arttheft once "Kingdoms..."
was released, it struck us all like a bolt from the blue. In order not
to bring this action against Pulverised and ourselves, we've now changed
the cover. The new work of art is made by Chrille Andersson of H.R Graphics,
who also is responsible for the rest of the layout. The re-release of
"Kingdoms..." with the new cover will be available shortly.
6.Didn't give you to make the cover by Dan Seagrave
himself or you said him what he has to do?

7.Let me go further to explain other things that
confuse me... I have an impression that "Cimmerian" was inconsistent.
On the one hand we have a kind of groovy Death Metal inspiring the six
first tracks, on the other hand we have two tracks different from the
previous ones... (by the way-I like those songs!)
The material for "Cimmerian" was put together throughout a very long
period of time, therefore its inconsistence. Three of the eight songs
on the debut can be found on "More To The Story Than Meets The Eye",
which is our last demo to date, while the remaining five songs were
written in between.
8.The new album is different, more consistent,
homogenous, even conceptual musically. Is it true that you recorded
everything alone there, except drum, keyboards and violin parts?
Unlike how "Cimmerian" came into existence, the material for "Kingdoms..."
was put together more in an album-thinking way. If you'd ask me I'd
say this is the main reason for its consistency. As goes for me recording
everything except for the things you enumerated, yes I did!
9.Now let me ask you a couple of questions about
the past of Unmoored? What you did before the debut album?
We recorded three demos between 1994 and 1997 among other things. There
were also several drummers put to the proof before Nicke came forth
and decided to join the band. Above this, there's nothing much of relevance
to tell!
10.What was a main cause that your drummer Niclas
Wahlen left the band? And how you seduced Jocke Pettersson from Thy
Primordial/Dawn to record "Kingdoms..." with you? (he did a great job...)
Like said before, Nicke lost interest in the band at the same time as
his execution behind the drums more or less stagnated. He simply held
back the proggressive side of the band and this was something that wouldn't
work in the long run. That's why he had to go. We became acquainted
with Jocke when we recorded "Cimmerian". So when Nicke quit the band
we got in touch with Jocke and simply asked him if he would be interested
in helping us out by playing the drums on "Kingdoms...". We sent him
a promo containing demo versions of the soon-to-be album material and
once he had listened to it, it was not long before he decided to join
up. He's not a permanent member though!
11.If you talk with your friends or give the interviews
or just read the reviews, what comparisons of Unmoored you see/hear
mostly?
When "Cimmerian" was released we were often compared to Entombed, Dismember,
Edge Of Sanity and Pro-Pain to mention a few. Nowadays we're mostly
compared to bands such as Hypocrisy, Edge Of Sanity, Dimmu Borgir and
Dissection among others.
12.Also your voice has changed since the first
LP (reminding then a vocalist of Opeth-sometimes) to the new one (here
reminding rather screams from Peter Tagtgren). What you think?
Well, first of all I believe there are very few vocalists in this genre
that are original in the strict sense of the word. In fact, being so
is something that is next to inevitable if you'd ask me. As goes for
myself, I just try to make my vocals merge into our music in order to
create a functional unit, that's all.
13.Has a name of your band a special meaning to
you? What you had on your mind founding this name?
It's meaning is unessentiel. We just thought it sounded cool so it stuck.
I'm afraid that's all there's to it.
14.What do you want to say about the lyrics? Have
they also a special meaning, are they anything like a special message
or so...?
I'm not trying to spread any message with my lyrics or anything. I pretty
much just write down the thoughts and opinions of my own whenever I
see, hear or read something interesting that affects me in one way or
another.
15.Both albums were released by Pulverised Rec. from Singapore. What
do you think about their job? Don't you think that a distance seperating
Sweden from Singapore is anything what make problems?
We stay in touch with one another through e-mail and it has worked out
smoothly thus far. The distance is consequently not a problem. As goes
for promotion, distribution and so on, they're getting better at it
all the time.
16.Pulverised mostly supports Swedish bands. Did
you ever think why Swedish bands much often signed to the labels all
over the world than those from other countries? You know, these musicians
from less known countries may think-"oh, they are from Sweden, so sooner
or later they would be signed somewhere...". What do you think?
I don't think just being Swedish is to anyone's advantage, even though
I guess it can be so to a certain extent occasionally. In the end it's
still the music and not the nationality of the band that determines
whether you'll end up being signed or not.
17.Finally let's talk about something humorous.
Firstly who is an author of your crazy nicknames like "Evil", "Infernal"
or "hellish" Spice? Don't say that you use them every day (ha ha ha)...
Instead of using "true evil" black metal nicks, we thought it would
be a cool idea to do a metal interpretation of the nickname-concept
"Spice Girls" apply. Do we use them every day...ha ha, I don't think
so!
18.Secondly, a hidden track on "Kingdoms..." It's
a joke, I suppose. Wasn't it better to do a cover of famous, sexy, blasphemous
and the best band of all times-Spice Girls?
Ha ha ha...well, "Satan", as we unofficially call the hidden track,
is very much written in the vein of irony, just like you suspicioned.
