INTERVIEWS - The Darkest Hours (CANADA) - 2004

Hi guys, how are you?
Just fine thanks!

1- For those who don't know Unmoored, can you talk a little bit about your musical background & Unmoored history?

I have been playing drums for about 5 years or something. It all started when i was at a friend of mine who was playing drums at the time. When I was there I sat down trying to play the drums, and since that day, I´ve been hooked! I´ve never been taking any lessons though. Christian were younger, he went to music-school for a couple of years, learning to play the guitar. Other than that, he is also selftaught. Thomas have been punishing his guitar for a long time. He´s a monster and he has always been practising alot! Unmoored started back in the shift of 93/94. Three demos were recorded between 94-97 and the last demo got the band a deal with Pulverised Records in 97. Two albums were released with them (Cimmerian & Kingdoms Of Greed). After some line-up changes, I joined the band in 2001 and Thomas joined in 2002. In the summer of 2002 we started to record Indefinite Soul Extension, which would become a quite long process. And here we stand now, with a new album to be unleashed upon the world!

2- How would you describe your band for people that never heard it?

It´s really hard to describe our music, mostly because our albums sound quite different from each other. If we talk about Indefinite Soul Extension, the ground stone is death metal. But there are also a huge mix of different styles evident on the album, like black metal & some prog stuff. Basicly we just write riffs & parts that we like ourselves and it doesn´t matter if it sounds more death metal or black metal, for instance. If it sounds cool, we´ll go for it. The best thing to do is to track down the album to get your own opinion.

3- You guys just finished your third album, “Indefinite Soul-Extension” Could you talk about it and tell us more about the recording of the album?

The recording of the album was pretty demanding. First we started out in Abyss Studios for a Week. There we recorded drums, guitars & bass. It was a stresfull week, but we managed to complete the foundation within the timeframe. After that Christian and Thomas bunkered up in Thomas own studio to record the rest of the album. Acoustic guitar, keyboards, violin, etc were put on tape. The vocals had to be postponed because of Christians infected throat. The illness haunted him for 3-4 months, and it was quite disturbing to have to wait for it to pass. But when he got better he did a kickass performance. When that was done, Thomas mixed the album and also mastererd it!

4- How did you chose the title for the album and what does it means for you?

Christian compose all the lyrics in Unmoored. And they are also very personal to him. I, and no one else either for that matter, don´t know what they are about. All i can tell you is that it´s a concept album and that the title goes hand in hand with the lyrics.

5- Can you talk about the concept behind your album lyrically & musically?

As i said in the last question, the lyrics I can´t answer for. Musicially we always try to push ourselves and Unmoored to the next level. To do that we tried to keep every song extremely dynamic and interresting.

6-You are Sweden natives. For your two previous albums, you were on Pulverised Records, based in Singapore. This time, you signed with Code 666, based in Italy. How come Unmoored ended up with labels based as far of Sweden?

The main reason, I think is that there are not too many labels in Sweden. Although me and Christian are signed to a swedish label with two other bands we play in (Incapacity & Torchbearer). But it´s also by a mere chance. It just happened to be that Code 666 liked the promo we send out. I don´t think that there is too much to speculate about, hehe. It´s the same with Pulverised Records. It probably could have been a label in any country.

7- Can you develop about your contract with Code 666? Is it a long-term contract? What can we expect?

The deal we signed with Code 666 is for one album and an option for a second. An Option means that if Code 666 want to do a second album with us, we´re obligated to do one. And how the way it´s going now, I definately think that we will release the fouth Unmoored album on Code 666. From us as a band, we will try to make the next album even better then Indefinite Soul Extension. We already have some really cool ideas for the next album, and it will be a blast to start working on it!

8- I heard that you got pretty exciting reactions for your two previous albums. Are you expecting something similar for your new album? Something bigger?

Of course we are hoping for something bigger.

9- And now that Code 666 began to send promos to the medias, did you already get reactions about “Indefinite Soul-Extension”? If yes, how was it so far?

The response thus far is AMAZING! It´s by far much better then on the two previous albums. We really didn´t expect it to be so well recieved.

10- So how does it feel to know that you got 95% for the review of your new album on The Darkest Hours?

It feels very good of course. It´s amazing to be appreciated for something you do.

11- Now that "Indefinite Soul-Extension" is finished, what's the next step for Unmoored?

Hopefully we will go out on tour, but there is nothing planned at the moment. As a band, Unmoored hasn´t been doing more than a handfull of shows. So it would be really cool to get out on the road!

12- Shall we expect to have the chance to see Unmoored in Montreal someday?

It´s really hard to say. If we get the chance to go overseas we woulnd´t hesitate for one second. But for now there is nothing planned. But we have to hold our fingers crossed!

13- Between “Kingdoms of Greed” and “Indefinite Soul-Extension”, the line-up has change quite a lot. Can you talk about the changes that it brought in the midst of Unmoored?

Yeah. In 2001 I joined Unmoored. For quite some time they have had some trouble finding a suitable drummer. We rehersed and played 2 shows. This was the time when Rickard and Tobbe still were in the band. In early 2002, I think it was, they quit due to different reasons. A part of it was that everyone in the band didn´t want to walk down the same road. But we parted as good friends. Pretty much immediately after they left, we welcomed Thomas onboard.

14- When I first listened to “Indefinite Soul-Extension”, one thing that caught me on was the solos. I was so glad to hear it, ‘cause this is one thing that is not used so often in the metal scene at this moment. It seems that it is not a trend. Anyways, you did used it, and it was well done. So why did you choose to incorporate a lot of solos into your songs?

When we write a new Unmoored album we always want to take it to the next level. And to take Indefinite Soul Extension one step further, we really wanted some kick-ass lead parts. Since Christian and Thomas had been friends for quite some time, we were anxious to get him onboard. And as you said, it´s not being used in death metal like this. I also think it blend in really cool with the rest of the music.

15- You inserted keyboards and violins parts in some of your songs, played by guest musicians. Does it means something special for you? In what way their music contributes to yours?

To insert keyboard and the violin is to make the album more interresting and taking the music to the next lever, as i talked about earlier. The violin is a cool thing to use in death metal, because it´s never used. And it´s quite fun to use it just in one place in one song! It makes you go "What the fuck was that?" =).

16- What do you prefer between the writing process, the recording of an album in studio and playing live? And why?

Record in album is one of the best things i know. It´s really stresfull and demanding, but the same time it´s very fun. You have been writing songs for 1-2 years and then you have 2 weeks to put them down on tape. I haven´t got too much experience playing live though. All in all i have played 8 shows in my life. But every show has been great. I really love the adrenaline rush you have during the whole set, and I can´t wait to get out on the road! And to answe the question, I don´t think that you can compare it. It´s two completely different situations and feelings. I love them both though!

17- Besides Unmoored, do you guys have other projects? If yes, can you tell us more about them?

Yes, we have LOTS of projects, hehe! Christian and I play togheter in four different bands. Unmoored, Incapacity, Solar Dawn & Torchbearer. Incapacity is a thrash/death metal band. Other members in the band are Anders Edlund (Solar Dawn), Dread (Edge Of Sanity), Robert Ivarsson (Pan-Thy-Monium). We have released our debutalbum this year through a swedish label called Cold Records. We are going to enter Soundlab studios in februari to do the follow up! Solar Dawn is a more melodic death metal band that other than us consist of Anders Edlund and Robban Karlsson (Edge Of Sanity). Last year we released an album on the danish label Mighty Music. Torchbearer is faster and harder. More of an death metal/black metal band. Other members in the band is Jörgen Johansson (Setherial), Pär Johansson and Mikael Degerman (satariel). We are going to enter black-lounge studios in december to record our debut album, which also will be released through Cold Records.
