INTERVIEWS - Metal Maniacs (ITALY) - 2003

1) This is your third full length, but Italian kids don’t know about Unmoored. May you speak about your band?
Well, we started off back in the winter of 1993/94. Recorded three demos between 1994 and 1997. Signed to the Singaporian label Pulverised Records, in the summer of 1997. Recorded our debut-album, "Cimmerian", at Sunlight studios later that same year. Went through som line-up changes and then recorded our second opus, called "Kingdoms Of Greed", at studio Abyss, at the end of 1999. Went through some more line-up changes, before recording the promo, simply called "Promo 2001", which eventually got us signed to Code666, at the beginning of 2002. Indefinite Soul-Extension was recorded at the Abyss studios and Cristeria Mastering, in the winter of 2002/03.

2) “Indefinite Soul Extension” is an album complete and complex. Try to explain your compositive process and the secrets of this album.

When it comes to the compositional process, it's pretty much me, on my own, trying to squeeze out the very best I can, riff-wise and so on! Then I do a pre-productional thing. Once done, I send it off to the other guys and they do their thing. This is basically the way all our albums have come up, music-wise. Then it's time for the lyrical process, which often is the most time-consuming procedure of them all. In fact, I don't think I've ever completed all lyrics, in time for an album recording, to this day:) As goes for having album-secrets revealed, that will cost you my friend....haha!

3) Don’t you believe the album complexity could be a problem (for listeners) due to the its various influences?

I guess it could, but since I always write, first and foremost, for myself and no-one else, people just have to deal with it. You can't please everyone! All you can do is being true to yourself and follow your heart. In the end, honesty always pays off! At least, that's the philosophy I live by:)

4) Every band has a fans’ target. Which is your?

Well, since I always write for myself and no-one else, there are no real fan-target, but I guess our sound could attract your attention, if you're into death metal of the more unpredictable kind!

5) What about the lyrics?

On our first album, entitled "Cimmerian", they dealt with all kinds of shit. No real theme or anything, mainly because all its material was written during a very long period of time. The lyrics on "Kingdoms Of Greed", on the other hand, have a main thread, running all through. You could say, they all kind of deal with the act of conceiving desires and the aftermath of doing covetous deeds. The lyrics on "Indefinite Soul-Extension", also spring from a conceptional theme. I will not go into what they're dealing with though, since they are very personal and my intention is to keep them that way.

6) Over the years you had a lot of troubles to find a drummer. How do you find the work done by Henrik Schonstrom?

It's not so much finding a drummer, that has been our problem. It's finding a drummer who's into metal in general and more particularly death metal. The town in which me and Thomas live, has always been more of a glam rock haven, than a haunt of metal. This is why we had to look for a competent drummer elsewhere. We found Henrik Schönström through an internet-friend. At first, we thought the distance would become a real problem, since he lives 400 kilometres away from us, but things have worked out extremely well, thus far. As goes for his performance on "Indefinite Soul-Extension", I've got one word for you - extraordinary! The guy is only 20 years old. He is self-taught and has only been playing for four years. Still he manage to make it sound like he's been doing it all his life. He's an amazing drummer and I'm extremely satisfied with what he has acco mplished on this album.

7) Who’s the author of the clean vocals? It’s a good singer as well as the growler. Their duets are very impressive.

Thanks and thanks:) All vocals on this album are performed by me. It's cool to hear that you enjoy the mixture! I've always been a sucker for dynamics and varying the vocals, is just one way of putting it into practise.

8) You’ve worked with a couple of famous and good producer as P. Tagtgren and T. Skogsberg. What did you learn from?

To be honest, you learn as much from successful producing, as from the mistakes you make, while recording. At least, both ways have had a great impact on me and my musical development. As goes for what I've learned from the producers mentioned here above, that's really hard to tell in detail, since we're talking about a myriad of inspirational impressions of making progress! Lets just say I've learned a great deal, from both of them:)

9) What’s your play list at the moment?

Nothing in particular. It differs from day to day.

10) You’re a bet for Italian label Code666. Do you think they will win this bet?

I sure hope so, guess time will tell though:)

11) Anna Lindh was killed just yesterday. What is your opinion about?

First and foremost, there's the great loss to her husband, children, relatives, friends and workmates. Then, being our foreign minister, there's the serious blow to the Swedish democracy. Sad and tragic is what it is!

12) Have you planned to come on stage in Italy? And in Europe?

We'd love to, but there's nothing planned at the moment!

Spend your ultimate words and send a kiss to the Italian chicks!

Thanks for helping us, spreading the word and don't forget to check out the new Unmoored album, entitled "Indefinite Soul-Extension". Out now on Code666!
