INTERVIEWS - Totentanz magazine (GERMANY) 2003

Hi Christian,

This is Chris from the German Totentanz-mag. I'm gonna contact you right now via Code 666 because your newest output convinced me a lot with its various, skilled approach and your twosided strong voice. Congratulations dude, this album should take you further !!!! For now it's up to the questions to make the interview running, thanks in advance to give me and the inquiry enough attention!!!!

Thanks! Cool to hear that you like the album:)

1. In my imagination the title could refer to the way you compose music. The variety of styles and the succesive arrangements indicates that you have let yourself go with the flow of inspiration, without real borders. What do you think about that presumption? Does the title more reflect the contents of the lyrics?
Well, as goes for not giving a damn about musical borders and so on, I guess it has alot to do with the self-confidence and trust in yourself, as a musician, you gain as you go. Once feeling more secure about your own ability, you start to care less about what others may think and listen more to what your heart tells you, instead. In a way, both inspiration and creativity, spring from the confidence of not having to limit yourself, so I guess you could see the album-title as a way of describing our present ways of making music, as well as describing anything else, found borderless. To me, there are no misinterpretations, when it comes to art:)

2. For me the progression of Unmoored is manifested in more agressive and progressive songs. Where would you see the marks and effects of musical progression ?
In our case, I think the change of line-up, has a lot to do with our progression. Inspirationally, it can be a breath of fresh air, in more ways than one, working with new, extremely talented people! As goes for becoming more aggressive, I think there are way too many bands today, trying, intentionally, to become more and more appealing, with each new album made. To me, that's like a progressive anticlimax. Progression can never be about always taking the easy way out! I am more inclined to think that it's all about being open-minded and true to yourself, in order to remain unpredictable and avoiding stagnation. In the long run, honesty always pays off!

3. Track 2 "Commit to the fire" starts with a huge Swedish oldschool-riff. Which bands of the old Swedish death-scene have fascinated, inspired you most ?
Do you think so? I've never thought of it as an old-school riff, but perhaps you're right:) As goes for old-school heroes of mine, I'd have to say Entombed, Dismember, Edge Of Sanity, Cemetary, Grave, Unleashed and Therion. There's nothing like the good old days:)

4. Most journalists, me included, often fix descriptions by comparisons. How does it feel for you when your way of singing is compared with Dan Swanö ?
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and since there's nothing you can do about it, why bother? :) If I was to get upset from every parallell, drawn between me and other musicians, I would most likely end up mentally deranged:) It doesn't matter if you're the most original musician on the planet, people will always find parallells to draw, between you and other musicians. Cynical as it seems, it's a fact!

5. What is the deeper sense in often using those cloudformation-pictures. Is it a symbol for endlessness ?
You tell me...haha! As goes for our layout, the sombre landscapes portrayed, help, as a whole, visualizing the lyrics, that's all! I'm afraid I can't tell you what the lyrics are about though, since they are very personal and my intention is to keep them so:)

6. You and drummer Schönström are playing together in almost four bands. Is Torchbearer, according to the samenamed song on the last album, a black metal-commando ? How do you differentiate, priorize between the three other partially similar bands ? Is Unmoored the most ambitious one ?
Torchbearer is not a black metal band. It's more of a death/thrash metal band, incorporating some black metal elements, into the music. As goes for giving priority, we treat Unmoored, Incapacity, Torchbearer and Solar Dawn, equally. The same goes for ambition. They are all equally important.

As i said before, thanx alot for dedicating yourself to my questions.....hope to see your guys on tour.......cheers, Chris
Thank you, for your shown interest! C-ya!
