1. Yo, Goatlord of Infernal Realms of Hellish Creations and Demonic Legions... or Chrille, if you prefere that name... How are you doing, my friend?
Evil as always pal!
2. For some strange reason, not many people know much about UNMOORED, eventhough you guys have released 2 awesome albums. Could you just hand me and the readers a short biography so that we may learn some more about you?
No problems mate! We started off back in the winter of 93/94. Recorded three demos between 94 and 97. Signed to Pulverised Records in the summer of 97. Recorded our debut-album, entitled "Cimmerian", at Sunlight studios in November that same year. Went through some line-up changes, then recorded our second opus called "Kingdoms Of Greed" at Abyss studios in the end of 99. It was released in the early fall of 2000.
3. When I met you guys in Gothenburg, I also had the privilege of meeting your new drummer, Henke. I also learned that he lives in Malmö, which is quite a distance from Skövde where the rest of UNMOORED lives. I must say that I think he definately does a good job though. How did you find out about this guy and how did it come to be that he started to play with you guys?
Well, since Jocke, who helped us out with the drumming on "Kingdoms...", allready is involved with several other bands, we knew it would never work out in the long run with him as a session-drummer. We'd probably have to cancel the greater part of our "live" opportunities because of him and his tight schedule:) So in order to play live again, we simply had to find ourselves a suitable drummer on a more permanent basis. A friend of mine helped us out by "spreading the word" on the internet and Henke was the first one taking the bait so to speak! We rehearsed together a couple of times and since it sort of clicked right away, Henke decided to join. As goes for the distance, it's not really a problem since we can't rehearse that much anyway with Rickard being an eveningworker and Tobbe studying in Östersund.
4. Now, let's talk some about your music. As you know, I am more of a fan of your first release, Cimmerian, so let's start with that one. You recorded the album in Sunlight Studios with none other that Tomas Skogsberg behind the mixer. Now, I know that you weren't quite satisfied with the result, though I must say that I like the sound on that album. Could you elaborate some on why you weren't satisfied with Sunlight and Tomas Skogsberg? Was it merely the final result or was it something more behind it?
The songs just didn't turn out the way we wanted them to. It felt like Tomas Skogsberg was more like working against us than backing us up. We had our vision, but he just didn't seem to give a damn. It was like "this is my studio...I'm pulling the strings around here...deal with it or get the fuck out!" and when you are a greenhorne-band like we were back then you just sort of go with the flow. I mean, it's not like we hate the way "Cimmerian" turned out or anything. It's just that it didn't quite come up to our expectations, that's all.
5. Since this is my first interview, ever, I do have to ask this standard question, but let's see if I can make it abit more interesting: Where do you find your inspiration to create the music? Not many bands dare to experiment alot with different styles and such, but I must say that you seem to care little for such things. Is it hard to first come up with an awesome power-crushing deathmetal riff and then just make a full turn and create a soft harmonical acoustic riff in the same song?
I get inspired from all kinds of shit. It doesn't matter if it's pop, folk music, metal or punkrock as long as it touches me in some way. I believe that it is to your advantage if you allow yourself to be susceptible to new impressions. As goes for creating a dynamic songstructure, I think the challenge in trying to get the extremes working together is the necessary motive power needed in order to be a productive writer. Combining the two elements is therefore not a problem the way I see it.
6. Let's discuss lyrics. I know that you write whatever comes to your mind, but do you have a certain... I don't know... Theme... when it comes to your lyrics? I mean, alot of Black Metal lyrics for instance, often carries a more darker theme and atmosphere in their lyrics (i.e. Satanism etc.). Your comments?
I usually just try to find suitible topics for the lyrics of each and every song in order to create the right atmosphere as a whole, which can be hard sometimes. Especially since our music often ranges from one extreme to another. The only time I've really had a theme going, running all through was when I wrote the lyrics for "Kingdoms...".
7. Now, let's move on to Kingdoms of Greed. As far as I know, that album has received alot of good response. Are you satisfied with the production and the material on that album?
Yes, "Kingdoms..." has been very well received all around the world. In fact, I've not read one single bad review of it to date. As goes for my own opinion, I'm very satisfied with the album as a whole and I personally take a lot of pride in it.
8. As KoG was recorded in Abyss Studios, the over-all production is very good, as most of the things recorded there. However, I must say that I was abit disappointed about just the sound. In my ears, it sounds awfully much like Hypocrisy, which isn't a bad thing in itself, but it is somewhat boring. Do you disagree with me when I say that? Or do you think that I have a point when it comes to the "Abyss-sound"?
I think every studio has "its" sound. If you for instance record an album in studio Fredman, you'll most likely end up with a Gothenburg-ish sounding product in the vein of In Flames and Arch Enemy. If you put your material on tape in Sunlight studios, you'll most likely end up with a Stockholm-ish sounding product, following in the footsteps of Entombed and Dismember and if you record an album in Abyss, yes, you'll probably end up with a sound in the vein of Hypocrisy and such.....I don't know about you, but to me it sounds like a catch-22 situation.
9. What about the Swedish metal-scene nowadays? Since Sweden is definately one of the top-producers of high-quality Metal, you surely must have comments on how the scene? Can you mention any Swedish acts you think deserve any recognition?
I think the swedish scene is one the most qualitative ones around at the moment and has been so for quite some time now, even though a certain inflation of innovation can be discerned these days. Swedish bands that I think people should have their eyes open to are Darkane, Theory In Practise and Aeon (ex Defaced Creation) to mention a few.
10.I said before your CD have much different moods...
So how would you define "Kingdoms of Greed" for the people who still
didn't listen it?
It's a very various record, with both very brutal stuff and melodic
songs. Very good sound, and well it's the ultimate death metal
recording so far..
11.Do you find it hard to stay original with your
music with so many different bands?
I guess sometimes when I play it can be hard not to copy other bands,
as you know, there are very many death/black metal bands from around
here. But when it came to making new riffs Christian always seems to
have new ideas. I don't know were he gets all ideas from but that's
just the way it works for us.
12.What's your view on today's music scene? Which
are the strongest releases you have listened to lately?
I think the scene is very good, there are many good bands around, Cannibal
Corpse, Iron Maiden, The Crown, Motorhead, & Vader (to name a few).
All of them have released killer cd's lately.
13.Are you open-minded for any other kind of music
besides metal?
I listen to all kinds of music, extreme synth/industrial music that
really sounds like machine made music is kind of cool, but mostly it
is metal, I'm very much into the older bands like Judas Priest, Black
Sabbath and stuff since I've been a metalhead all my life
14.You recorded you first "Cimmerian" in Sunlight
S, which differences have you found between these two studios?
Lately,
Sunlight seems don't have a good reputation...It's kind of hard to explain,
the two studios have their own special sounding, i guess that the Sunlight
sound is more rock'n roll and Abyss metal.
15.About your first "Cimmerian"...I admit I've
never listened to it, what kind of music it contains? Are you satisfied
with how it comes out?
The Cimmerian cd is not so fast played as kingdoms, and maybe a bit
more groovey. Yes we are satisfied with the songs on Cimmerian, but
the sound could have been better, it's not bad but the recording of
Kingdoms in Abyss sounds much better.
16.From which area of Sweden do you come? Any
metal scene over there?
We are from a part of Sweden called Västra Götaland, and the metalscene
in this town (Skövde) is not so good, but there is alot of bands from
Gothenburg as you maybe know The Haunted, In Flames etc.
17.Last question about your label...How things
goes with Pulverised R.? are you satisfied with how they are promoting
your band?
When we did our first cd things went kind of slow with Pulverised, but
with Kingdoms they got alot better, and the promotion for Kingdoms is
good, so Pulverised records is ok.
