Interview with Swedish Metal Magazine (2001) - Sweden

1. Please tell people that don´t know anything about the band, where you are from, when you started to play together. A short Solar Dawn history….
Well the band was formed back in 1997 by m e and Månsson plus 2 other guys. At first as a form of Pantera, Slayer, Fear Factory mix. With time the line-up was changed as well as the musical direction. In summer -98 we recorded "The festival of fools" demo in a nearby studio in Skövde, Sweden. Our lack of singer made the co-operation with Christian Älvestam ( also Unmoored ) possible. A natural choice since m e and him had been friends for some years, plus the fact that he is an extremly good singer. In late -99 we recorded " Desideratum". A promo that was used only for promotional matters. This time with Christian as a permanent member handling both bass and vox. The promo achieved very good response from both medias and labels. Mighty Music gave us the best contractproposal so we hung up with them and here we are now……

2. What are your influenses and how you would describe your music?
We have a lot of different influences and I think that is a necessity to function as a band. Personally I´m were fond of the Scandinavian deathmetal scene but also trash in general. Månsson is an old punkrocker and Christian likes the old-school Florida scene and Henrik is very much into progressive stuff….the mix is huge as you can see….he he. But we can still make music the Solar Dawn way!! Frost-Work is basically "New wave of Swedish Deathmetal" like ATG, In Flames e.t.c…these are bands that have influenced m e in one way or another and since I made like 95% of the material for that album I think its natural that the sound is similar to the before mentioned!

3. You´re debut album released earlyer this year is called "Frost-Work", can you tell the readers something about thealbum, your music and lyrics?
Frost-Work is "Desideratum" in a re-mastered shape. Mighty Music released it as a "teaser" for our upcoming fullength album "Equinoctium". It was pressed only in 1000 copies. The lyrics are based on things and moments that have affected m e in some way. But the album have no "Concept" lyrically/musically, whatsoever. Concerning the music: It´s up to every one to make up their own mind! If you are in to the swedish metal scene with bands like At the gates and (old) In Flames, I´m pretty sure you will like Solar Dawn.

4. When and where were the album recorded and when was it released ?
It was recorded in G:sound Studios near Skövde in november -99. And I think it saw the light of day on january 12:th 2000.

5. Frost-Work is released by the Danish label Mighty Music. How are things working out between the band and the label?
I would say: Good, seen all over!! We have argued about some things but you will solve most problems with compromises. The only thing I really don´t like is that they can´t decide a permanent date for releases. But it IS a small label so you can´t demand too much. I guess??!!

6. So when will your first full-length album see arrive ?
As I said earlier: I don´t know an exact date. We´re told they will release it in the end of january/beginning of february next year.

7. Are you going to do some kind of Swedish tour later this year or early next year ? And, will there be any gigs/tours outside Sweden in the near future?
We are all students on University so we have a lot to do. I guess we will do some gigs to promote the album next spring, but most gigs will be in Sweden. We´ve been promised a gig in Copenhagen probably together with some other band from our label, and hopefully we will do some apperance in Germany. It´s still just planning but….time will tell!!

8. How are you composing your music & lyrics?
Often at home, we try as much as possible to write entire songs with music and arrangements and when it´s done we rehearse together. It´s the best thing to do since Henrik ( drums ) live in Malmö and it´s almost 400 km from Skövde.

9. How much time is spent in the rehersalroom?
Not TOO much, unfortunately. I miss the abillity to rehearse continuesly. Before shows and recordings we try to spend an entire week in the rehearsalroom. It´s positive thou, this way we make it intensive for a short period instead of make everyone hate the songs when it´s time to record them…he he.

10. What are Solar Dawn up to at the moment?
We are waiting for our fullength to be released and at the same time we write material for the next record. Nothing is planned yet for when we will enter the studio. The only thing we know is that it will be recorded in Abyss with Tommy Tägtgren as producer. You can´t find a better person to work with.

11. What do you think about the musicbusiness, internet and mp3´s?
The musicbuisness in general sucks big time! It´s all about money in one way or another and if you don´t act carefully you can be extremely cheated. As an actor on the market it´s up to you to make mistakes or success!

12. What do you think about to promote a band and new albums on internet ?
I think it´s great for smaller bands, like ourselves to promote our stuff via internet. Hopefully you will gain some interest for the CD version that way. But I do understand that labels get pissed off when their bands is exposed on mp3 sites with fullength albums even before the album is released! It is a great loss of profit for them!

13. What do you think about the metalscene in Sweden and it the rest of the world at the moment and what do you think about the past metal-years?
The stagnation- phase is about to begin! Even thou bands pop up like flowers in the grass. Every reviewer want´s something new and original but that is , as I see it, to ask for something that can´t be done. Why don´t accept that every band has something to offer if you give it a try?? If all bands worldwide were original it would be the other way around, people would ask for more un-original bands. That´s the way we works!! Plus the fact that we have an urge to part everything and put into specific boxes. How would you do that with millions of original bands??? Looking back in the mirror, Swedish bands have proved that Sweden is nr.1 in metal!!!

14. Thank you for your time and good luck in the future with everything, is there anything that you want to add to this?
First of all: Thanks to you, Fredrik for your shown interest! And to all out there: Keep your eyes open for "Equinoctium". Release early 2002. Also keep in touch if you want to book us for a gig. See ya around!!!
